Authorities in Kathmandu conducted extensive cleanup operations in the Pashupati area to prepare for the upcoming Maha Shivaratri festival, ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for thousands of devotees.

Intensive Cleanup Efforts Transform Sacred Site

Workers and officials swept through key areas around the Pashupatinath Temple, tackling piles of waste that had accumulated over time. In the latest phase of the long-running Bagmati Cleaning Campaign, teams focused on Suryaghat, Aryaghat, and the Ram Temple vicinity. They managed to clear four metric tons of garbage, with non-biodegradable items carted away by vehicles from the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. This effort was part of the 665th week of the campaign, which has been chugging along every Saturday since 2013. High-profile participants like Prakash Mani Sharma, Secretary of the Pashupati Area Development Trust, and Machakaji Maharjan from the Bagmati cleanup committee joined in, showing the commitment at every level. The Bagmati riverbank, especially from Bhasmeshwarghat to the dam, saw extra attention due to heavy garbage buildup, with plans to use a bulldozer for tougher spots. Another cleanup drive is lined up next Saturday, involving the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force, to keep the momentum going right up to the festival day.

These actions aren't just about tidying up; they're deeply tied to the spiritual essence of Maha Shivaratri. Devotees believe a pristine environment honors Lord Shiva and sets the right tone for worship. The Pashupati Area Development Trust has emphasized that cleaning and decoration works are now in their final stages, blending practical maintenance with festive adornments like flowers and lights across the temple grounds.

Comprehensive Preparations for a Seamless Festival

Beyond the cleanup, preparations are in full swing to handle the massive influx of pilgrims. The Pashupati Area Development Trust announced that all sub-committees have finalized arrangements for crowd management, security, and smooth darshan. Security forces from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Traffic Police, Armed Police Force, and even the National Investigation Department will be on high alert. The temple's four doors will swing open at 2:00 a.m. on the festival day, with queues organized from four entry points to avoid chaos. Sadhus and saints from Nepal, India, and other countries have already started arriving, filling the premises with an air of anticipation. The Guthi Sansthan has stocked up on essentials like firewood, food, worship materials, and dakshina for these holy visitors, to be distributed at spots including Ram Mandir, Bhashmeshwor, and Mrigasthali Gorakhnath.

We have made all necessary arrangements for services, worship, and accommodation of sadhus and saints during the festival, including continuous supply of food and firewood from February 13 to 16," said a Guthi Sansthan official.

Food services through Annapurna Ashram will run non-stop, and on the main day, Panchamrit offerings, oil lamps, curd, and fruits will be part of the rituals. Prohibitions are strict too—no meat, alcohol, marijuana, or other banned substances allowed in the Pashupati area to maintain sanctity.

Spiritual Significance and Devotee Expectations

Maha Shivaratri, falling on February 15 this year—a Sunday—draws over a million devotees to Pashupatinath, one of Hinduism's holiest Shiva temples. Pilgrims from across Nepal, India, and beyond will observe fasting, perform Rudra Abhisheka with milk, honey, and bel leaves, and stay awake through the night chanting mantras like Om Namah Shivaya. The midnight Nishita Kaal Puja peaks the celebrations. Many take a purifying dip in the Bagmati River before joining long queues—sometimes starting the night before. By mid-morning, tens of thousands have already had darshan, culminating in the enchanting Sandhya Aarti at 6:00 p.m. along the riverbank. At home, families cleanse spaces, set up Shiva idols, light lamps, and meditate for inner peace.

This festival symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and self-discipline. With gates opening extra early at 2:15 a.m. in some accounts, and eight queues inside plus four outside, organizers aim for orderly access. Visitors are advised to carry essentials like small cash for offerings, water, and hand sanitizer, while skipping leather items and cameras in restricted zones. The cleanup ensures the sacred space reflects the purity devotees seek, making this Shivaratri a profound spiritual gathering.

In summary, the meticulous cleanup at Pashupati sets the stage for a vibrant Maha Shivaratri, with robust security, provisions for sadhus, and rituals ready to welcome throngs of faithful. This blend of cleanliness, preparation, and devotion promises an unforgettable festival honoring Lord Shiva.
