Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared that the enthusiasm of tourists from across India to visit Jammu and Kashmir remains undiminished, despite recent challenges. Speaking during a high-level review meeting in Jammu, he emphasized the region's enduring appeal and the central government's commitment to boosting its tourism sector. This statement comes at a time when the Valley is working to regain its footing after a terror attack in Pahalgam last April that shook the industry. Shah's visit, spanning two days, focused on assessing progress in various development areas, signaling a strong push towards normalcy and growth.

Tourism, a cornerstone of Jammu and Kashmir's economy, has shown signs of resilience. Hoteliers in Srinagar noted a promising influx of visitors in January, the first substantial numbers since the incident. While many destinations have reopened, some popular spots like Dodhpathri, Yusmarg, and the attack site Baisaran remain off-limits for safety reasons. Shah's reassurance aims to counter perceptions of insecurity and encourage more footfall from domestic travelers.

Review Meeting Spotlights Development Priorities

During the meeting, attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and senior officials, Shah conducted a thorough review of critical sectors. These included road infrastructure, power supply, industry growth, tourism promotion, and enhancements in 4G and optical fibre connectivity. He stressed the need for aggressive marketing campaigns targeting other Indian states to unlock the full tourism potential of Jammu and Kashmir.

The minister outlined the Centre's resolve to support new tourist destinations, promising all possible assistance. Beyond tourism, discussions covered harnessing hydropower potential, achieving full saturation of welfare schemes, and ensuring benefits reach the grassroots level. Shah also pushed for sports infrastructure development, including academies to engage youth, with plans to secure Rs 200 crore in investments. Promoting the dairy sector through the National Dairy Development Board was another key focus, reflecting a holistic approach to economic upliftment.

Government's Long-Term Vision for Prosperity

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the government is steadfast in its vision for a developed and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir. Shah highlighted unprecedented progress in ongoing projects, crediting continuous efforts for this momentum. The region has been included under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme for the first time in FY 2025-26, offering 50-year interest-free loans for capital projects to bolster fiscal stability.
