A Life Dedicated to Municipal Governance

Alka Kerkar, a prominent figure in Mumbai's political landscape, passed away on Saturday, March 21, at the age of 74 following a brief illness. The veteran politician and senior BJP leader breathed her last at a private hospital in Bandra, where she had been receiving treatment. Her death marks the end of an illustrious career spanning several decades in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, during which she earned recognition for her unwavering commitment to civic issues and local governance. As a three-time corporator representing the H-West ward, covering parts of Bandra and Khar, Kerkar became a familiar and respected face in one of Mumbai's most high-profile constituencies.

Kerkar's most significant achievement came in 2014 when she was elected Deputy Mayor of Mumbai, a position she held during the period of 2014 to 2015. This role allowed her to influence municipal decisions at a broader level and work across different wards and constituencies. During her tenure, the city was undergoing rapid urbanization, and she navigated the complex challenges of balancing developmental needs with the concerns of local residents.
