The Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has given the green light for acquiring 288 advanced S-400 missiles from Russia.

This decision, valued at around ₹10,000 crore, marks a significant step in strengthening India's air defence network.

The missiles include 120 short-range and 168 long-range variants, procured through the fast-track procedure to expedite delivery.

This move comes after the Indian Air Force depleted substantial stocks during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, a critical military operation that highlighted the system's effectiveness against aerial threats.

India is also expecting two additional S-400 systems, already under contract, to arrive in June and November this year, further enhancing operational readiness.
