The Indian men's senior basketball team found itself caught in the crossfire of escalating tensions in West Asia, turning what should have been a routine return trip into a tense 10-day saga.

After competing in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, the 18-member squad, led by American head coach Scott Flemming, was stuck in Doha, Qatar, as flight operations ground to a halt due to the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

The team had just wrapped up a match against Saudi Arabia, where they faced a tough defeat but showed resilience on the court. With airports closed and no flights available, the players and staff endured uncertainty, relying on coordination from the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), local federations, and Indian embassies.

The Unconventional Road Journey to Safety

The six-hour drive was a stark contrast to their usual air travel, navigating through a region described as a war zone. Upon arrival in Dammam, they were welcomed by the local Indian community, including members of the Saudi Arabia Telugu Association, who provided essential support at King Fahd International Airport.

"The team left Doha on Sunday to Dammam, which took around six hours to reach. It was the Qatar Basketball Federation which helped us with the travel arrangement, along with FIBA Asia. The BFI, the Indian embassy, and the external affairs ministry were in touch with the team there, too," said BFI secretary general Kulvinder Singh Gill.

Safe Return and Reflections on Resilience

Flight operations resumed partially, but with scarcity, the contingent split into two groups to head home. The BFI expressed gratitude to all involved, from embassies in Qatar and Riyadh to the external affairs ministry, for their relentless assistance with visas and logistics.

Back in India, the team landed in Nagpur before dispersing to Mumbai and Lucknow, marking the end of a challenging chapter. This incident sheds light on how sports teams must now prepare for such disruptions, blending athletic preparation with contingency planning for global instability.
